New statistics about childhood cancer

I found these statistics about childhood cancer the other day and coming from a mom who's child had cancer I knew that there was a great need for research but some of these statistics shocked me.  

• Number o children who will get cancer: 1 in 300 with that going up at least 4-6% every year
• Number of children who will not survive: 1 in 4
• Number of children diagnosed with cancer every day: 46 
• Number oc children who die from cancer every day: 7
• Number of children currently fighting cancer: 35,000
• Number of new drugs developed for childhood cancer in the past 25 years: 1 (yikes!)
• The only age group with declining survival rates: 15-22 year olds
• Percentage of cancer research money spent on childhood cancers: 3% (ouch!)
• Age group (other than 70+) with the highest cancer fatality rate: Teenagers
• Age group with the most advanced cancer at the time of diagnosis: Teenagers
• Age group with the highest number of life long chemo side effects: 15-22 year olds
• The most under represented age group in clinical trials: 15-19 year olds

Childhood Cancer new results for long term survivors

As survivors of childhood cancer are being studied they are finding that more and more they are suffering with many long term side effects. Just like the effects seen in my son Jakob.

Unfortunately we are learning that the many side effects are sometimes the worse of the beast. You over come one beast to only have 3 or 4 more to handle. It is even harder on a family as you don't have the support network of doctors and nurses and others going through treatment as you did when you are on treatment. I know first hand this situation. Jakob did 3 1/2 years of chemo everyday. We have been off chemo for 4 years and now have more problems then we did to begin with.

Often times there is no clear cut plan of treatment. The side effects that these children suffer from often have to be treated by many dr's and some just scratch their heads as they don't know what to do. We are just know coming into an age that we have survivors so this is uncharted territory for many.

The drugs we are giving our children were developed in the 1970's and are very toxic to their little bodies. Not to mention the emotional toll it takes on the families and siblings.
